DEBATE: Is Homework needed?

In Marion County, Florida 31 schools in the region banned elementary homework, according to an article in the Ocala Star Banner published July 2017.

Marion County’s superintendent Heidi Maier said, "The research showed that students who are given a preponderance of homework do not perform better, or get better grades, than those who do not.”

Marion County is not the only location banning homework. According to a CNN story, a second-grade teacher in the Houston area got rid of homework claiming that plenty of academic studies showed that homework-- specifically elementary-- does not improve academic performance.

Students in Shanghai, China do about 16 hours of homework per week, more than anywhere in the world, according to a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The same study showed that Students in Canada and America do about six hours of homework per week. Students in South Korea and Finland do the least amount of homework -- only three hours per week -- but their school systems are ranked in the top five in the world.

So what do you think, ISPP? Should we ban elementary homework too?
